Baal-peor

(Peor, or “opening” or “disclosure,” e.g. of the mouth, etc.) (Ps. 106 [105]:28; Num. 25:3, 5) — the name of a Moabite mountain and of a pagan deity worshiped on Peor. The service and festivals in honor of Baal-peor were accompanied by such vile depravity that women and maidens often sacrificed their innocence and chastity. “They (that is, the Israelites),” says the prophet, “went to Baal-peor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved” (Hos. 9:10).
