Paran

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Gen. 21:21; Num. 10:12; Deut. 1:1; Hab. 3:3)—a broad wilderness region associated with the Sinai Peninsula and the country south of Canaan. Hagar and Ishmael lived in the Wilderness of Paran; Israel camped and traveled there after leaving Sinai, and the spies set out from the wilderness toward Canaan (Gen. 21:21; Num. 10:12; 12:16; 13:3). David also withdrew toward Paran after Samuel’s death according to the traditional text of 1 Samuel 25:1.
