(love of wisdom; Col. 2:8; Acts 17:18)—the disciplined search for wisdom and for the principles of reality, knowledge, and moral life. Scripture commends wisdom, understanding, and the faithful use of the mind (Prov. 3:13–18; 8:10–11; Wis. 6:20; Sir. 6:18–37). Christ uses the images of sight and light to call hearers from darkness into truth, while also exposing false confidence and ignorance of Scripture (Luke 11:33–36; John 12:35–46; Matt. 15:14; 22:29). The apostles urge maturity of understanding and discerning love (1 Cor. 14:20; Phil. 1:9–10).
