Praetorium

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Matt. 27:27; Mark 15:16 and elsewhere). In Jerusalem in Pilate’s time, the praetorium was the governor’s residence and headquarters. The governors of Judea ordinarily lived in Caesarea, but at the great feasts, when the crowds required special precautions, they came to Jerusalem and occupied spacious, splendid quarters.
