(Sir. 24:14; Wis. 2:8 and elsewhere). In the East the rose is queen of flowers for fragrance, color, and beauty. In 2 Esdras 2:19 roses and lilies adorn the garden and symbolize the fullness of life. Ancient peoples wove roses into garlands for festivals and religious rites. The Plain of Sharon was especially suited to beautiful roses, and several kinds continued to grow in Palestine in the source’s day.
