Rooster

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Matt. 26:34). Nearly all the Evangelists mention the rooster, though only in connection with its crowing (Mark 14:30; Luke 22:60). The bird was known in deep antiquity in Assyria and neighboring lands. The source describes an ancient stone in the British Museum portraying a priest beside an altar with a small rooster bearing a crescent upon its head, suggesting that the bird received cultic honor among Babylonians or neighboring peoples. In ancient pagan Greece roosters were sacrificed.
