(leader; commander) (Isa. 20:1)—king of Assyria, successor of Shalmaneser and predecessor of Sennacherib, and founder of the last Assyrian dynasty before the Babylonian conquest. The Assyrian royal name Sarru-kin means “the true king.” He built a palace at Khorsabad whose walls and pavements bore sculptured reliefs and cuneiform inscriptions recording his victories. His name occurs only once in the Bible, where he sent his commander Tartan to conquer Ashdod.
