Satan
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(1 Chron. 21:1 and elsewhere)—a Hebrew word meaning an adversary or enemy. In Scripture the name is especially applied to the devil, chief of the evil spirits, enemy of God, tempter, and destroyer of human souls. The Lord’s use of the word toward the Apostle Peter in Matthew 16:23 identifies the satanic temptation expressed in Peter’s rebuke.
