Sepharad

(meaning unknown) (Obad. 20)—a name found only in Obadiah’s promise that the exiles of Jerusalem in Sepharad would possess the cities of the south. Jewish tradition placed the land in Spain, but the source preferred a location near the Bosporus, alluding to Jerome, and noted a similarly named place near Cappadocia in ancient Persian monuments connected with Darius. It also reports that Hadrian banished many Jews to that region.
