Sepharvaim
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(2 Kings 17:24 and elsewhere)—an Assyrian city from which colonists were transferred to Samaria after Shalmaneser carried the Israelites into captivity. The source identifies it tentatively with Sippara, the southernmost city of Mesopotamia on the Euphrates’ eastern bank. It was the center of a small district, had its own king, and worshiped chiefly Adrammelech and Anammelech. Cuneiform inscriptions called it the City of the Sun. The dual form of the biblical name suggested to the source that Sepharvaim occupied both banks of the Euphrates.
