(dark; muddy) (Isa. 23:3)—a name applied in some passages to the Nile, whose dark silt made its water turbid. Jeremiah’s expression “to drink the waters of Sihor” means seeking Egypt’s help (Jer. 2:18). In Joshua 13:3, however, “Shihor, which is before Egypt,” probably denotes the stream or wadi flowing into the Mediterranean near Rhinocolura rather than the Nile, since the territory immediately north of Sinai was not allotted to the twelve tribes. The source applies the same observation to 1 Chronicles 13:5. In Isaiah 23:3 the reference is plainly to the Nile.
