(Esth. 8:9)—the third month of the Hebrew year, beginning with the new moon of June, in which the Jews celebrated Pentecost. The source takes its name to be an ancient Persian word perhaps connected with a pagan deity and says it was probably adopted after the Babylonian captivity. See Year; Months.
