Sosthenes

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Acts 18:17; 1 Cor. 1:1)—a ruler of the synagogue at Corinth who was beaten before Gallio’s judgment seat when the proconsul refused to hear the accusation against Paul. First Corinthians names a Christian brother Sosthenes with Paul. The encyclopedia identifies the two and follows a later tradition that made him one of the Seventy and bishop of Colophon, but the New Testament does not prove either identification.
