First Maccabees preserves correspondence claiming kinship and friendship between Spartans and Jews: a letter from King Areus to the high priest Onias, Jonathan’s renewal of the alliance, and Spartan recognition after Jonathan’s death (1 Macc. 12:2–23; 14:16–23). Whatever the historical conventions of these letters, the text presents the relationship as one of mutual goodwill.
