Tetrarch

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Matt. 14:1; Luke 3:1)—a ruler of a territorial subdivision under Roman authority. Although the word originally meant ruler of a fourth part, New Testament usage does not require an exact quarter. Herod Antipas governed Galilee and Perea; Philip governed Iturea and Trachonitis with neighboring districts; and Lysanias governed Abilene. Such rulers remained subordinate to Rome, and Herod Antipas could also be called a king in popular speech (Mark 6:14).
