Capital and other punishments among the Hebrews

- before the Mosaic legislation, God declared death for murder: 'Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed' (Gen 9:6), though Scripture does not specify the method. The principal capital punishments named in the Mosaic Law include beheading (Judg 7:25; 2 Sam 4:7, 11-12; 2 Kgs 10:6; Matt 14:8, 10); stoning or death by arrows (Exod 19:13; 32:27); hanging (Num 25:4); burning alive (Lev 20:14; 21:9), as for a priest's daughter who profaned herself or a man who took both a woman and her mother; and stoning as the customary popular execution (Lev 20:2, 27).
