The Bear-star

(Job 9:9) — the name of a star in the constellation of the Great Bear. The ancient astronomers regarded the heliacal rising and setting of the Bear-star as a portent of sea-storms and hurricanes. It is thought that Job, in the cited passage, refers either to this star, or perhaps to the whole constellation of the Great Bear. The first to introduce this constellation were the Phoenicians, who were guided by it in their seafaring.
