The potter

(Jer. 18:2; 19:1; Matt. 27:7) (see Clay). Clay vessels were used by the Egyptians and Hebrews for various purposes, chiefly for the preparation of food. Sometimes written obligations were kept in such vessels (Jer. 32:14). Tiles with images and inscriptions were in use not only in Egypt and Assyria, but also in Palestine (Isa. 30:14; Ezek. 4:1). In Jerusalem there was a special class of royal potters (1 Chron. 4:23), and one locality, apparently inhabited by potters, took from them its name (Jer. 18:2; 19:1; 27 [as given]).
