Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(2 Macc. 12:35)—the region north and northeast of Macedonia, known in antiquity for horses, cavalry, metals, and warrior peoples. In 2 Maccabees a cavalryman named Dositheus, one of Bacenor’s men, seized Gorgias and would have taken him alive, but a Thracian horseman struck off Dositheus’s arm, allowing Gorgias to escape to Marisa. The source’s nineteenth-century political description of Thrace is not retained as current geography.
