Abarim, the mountains of Abarim

(crossings, fords) (Num. 27:12; Deut. 32:49) — the general name given to a mountain range running from north to south, east of the Jordan and the Dead Sea, partly in the tribe of Reuben, partly in the land of Moab. Nebo, Pisgah, and Peor are peaks of this range. It is supposed that the present-day mountains of Attarus form part of the Abarim range. Regrettably, more recent travelers have as yet little explored the surroundings of the Abarim mountains, which remain wild, deserted, and difficult to travel.
The children of Israel, after crossing the brook Arnon, encamped on the mountains of Abarim before Nebo (Num. 33:47). From one of its peaks, namely the summit of Pisgah, Moses surveyed the Promised Land (Deut. 3:27), and on one of them he died (Deut. 34:1–5).
