(Num. 26:33 and elsewhere)—son of Hepher of the tribe of Manasseh. He died in the wilderness without a male heir. His five daughters presented their claim to an inheritance before Moses; the LORD declared their plea just, and they received a portion among their father’s brothers. A general statute followed concerning inheritance where a man left no son. To prevent tribal land from passing to another tribe, the daughters married within their father’s clan (Num. 27:1–11; 36:10–12).
