Achan Achar

(Josh. 7:18) (troubler) — son of Carmi, of the tribe of Judah, who secretly took and hid in the ground various valuable items at the fall of the city of Jericho, contrary to the express command of God (Josh. 6:17, 18). For this sin the wrath of God was kindled against all the sons of Israel; however, by a special act indicated by God, Achan’s guilt was soon uncovered, and for it he was stoned together with his whole family, and afterward their bodies, as well as all their possessions, were burned in the valley north of Jericho, which from this took its name — Achor (Josh. 7:26).
