Horn

(1 Sam. 2:1–10 and elsewhere)—an emblem in Scripture of power, honor, and glory (Deut. 33:17; Luke 1:69), and therefore a frequent symbol of kings and kingdoms in prophetic visions (Dan. 7:20–24). Horns also served as vessels for liquids, especially oil and perfumes (1 Sam. 16:1; 1 Kings 1:39), and as trumpets (Josh. 6:8–13). Because an animal’s horns are its chief defense, to break a king’s or nation’s horn means to diminish its power, while to exalt the horn means to increase strength.
