Adonai
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Isaiah 40:10) — a name of the Lord, frequently found in the sacred books of the Old Testament; it is often applied to men also, in the sense of “lord,” as a mark of special honor. Later Jews, out of reverence for this sacred name, always pronounce “Adonai” whenever they encounter the word “Jehovah” in the text.
