Adoni-bezek Adonibezek

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Judg. 1:4, 7) (lord of Bezek, or lord of lightning) — the name, or title, of a certain Canaanite king. Defeated, he fled from the forces of the tribes of Judah and Simeon after the death of Joshua. Many of the Canaanites and Perizzites perished in this battle; Adoni-bezek himself fled, but was caught, and his thumbs and great toes were cut off. Thus he received due recompense for the like inhuman cruelty he had once inflicted upon seventy kings, who afterward gathered scraps under his table (v. 7). He was then brought to Jerusalem, and died there (Judg. 1:4–7).

Scripture cited
