Amalek

(meaning of the word unknown) (Gen. 36:12–16) — was the son of Eliphaz and great-grandson of Esau, one of the chieftains of Idumea. His mother’s name was Timna, and although she is called only a concubine, or second wife, of Eliphaz, Amalek evidently occupied a position equal to that of the other sons of his father. Some think that he was the forefather of the Amalekites, but this people is mentioned as already powerful long before Amalek’s birth (Gen. 14:7). Among the Arabs there is a tradition that he was a son of Ham.
