Ar, Ar-Moab

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Num. 21:28) — once the chief Moabite city; it was located twenty English miles south of the river Arnon. It is also called Rabbah, and by the Greeks Areopolis. It was once conquered and burned by Sihon, king of the Amorites (Num. 21:28); afterward it belonged to the tribe of Reuben, and around the time of Jerome, in the year 342 A.D., it was destroyed by an earthquake. It is now called er-Rabba, and travelers have quite recently discovered here, near the ruins of the ancient city, two abundant springs.
