Dibon

(according to Fürst, place of springs; according to Gesenius, wasting away, pining) (Num. 21:30; Josh. 13:9): a) A city, apparently originally belonging to the Moabites (Num. 21:29, 30). The tribe of Gad rebuilt it (32:34 [as given]), but Moses assigned it to the tribe of Reuben (Josh. 13:17). In the days of Isaiah and Jeremiah it was again taken by the Moabites (Isa. 15:2; Jer. 48:18). Dibon was located on the eastern side of the Jordan. Even in the time of Jerome there existed a place with a similar name.
However, modern travelers have not been able to determine with certainty the location of Dibon. Eusebius and Jerome mention Dibon under the name Dabon or Devon. In their time Dibon was a largelarge village beyond the Arnon. Today it bears the name Dhiban and lies 5 versts north of the Arnon, in the Wadi Mojib.
