Chemosh

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Num. 21:29; 1 Kings 11:7)—the national god of Moab. Solomon built a high place for Chemosh east of Jerusalem, and Josiah later defiled it during his reform (1 Kings 11:7; 2 Kings 23:13). Jeremiah calls the Moabites “the people of Chemosh” (Jer. 48:46). The source’s equation of Chemosh with the Roman god Mars is not historically established.
