Arbela, otherwise Arbel

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(1 Macc. 9:2) — a place in Galilee, where stood the settlement of Mesaloth, taken by Bacchides in the reign of Demetrius Soter. This locality, as described by Josephus, corresponds exactly to the present-day fortification of Kalaat Ibn Ma’an, with the ruins of Irbid lying to its south, in which Robinson recognized the ancient Arbela.

Scripture cited

1 Maccabees 9:2
