Gezer, or Gazer

(a part, a piece, a fragment) (Josh. 16:3) — an ancient Canaanite city, situated on the southern edge of the tribe of Ephraim, northwest of Jerusalem; it remained in the possession of the Canaanites (Josh. 10:33; 16:10; Judg. 1:29) until the king of Egypt took it and gave it as a dowry to his daughter, who married Solomon (1 Kings 9:16). Solomon restored and fortified it (1 Kings 9:17). As an important fortress, this city is frequently mentioned in Maccabean times (2 Macc. 10:32–36; 1 Macc. 9:52, and elsewhere).
