Arphaxad

— the name of two persons: a) (Gen. 10:22–24; 11:10; 1 Chron. 1:17–24) third son of Shem, son of Noah, from whom Abraham descended. He was born two years after the Flood and was the father of Shelah. The name of the patriarch Arphaxad is mentioned in the genealogy of the Lord Jesus Christ given by the Evangelist Luke (3:35, 36); b) (Judith 1:1–13) king of Media, who reigned in Ecbatana and was killed by Nebuchadnezzar on the mountains of Ragau during the war against him.
