Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(family of the Ases, or Yases) (Gen. 10:3) — grandson of Japheth, and probably forefather of the Ashkenazic peoples (Jer. 51:27), who inhabited the country lying on the eastern and southeastern shores of the Black Sea. However, the exact location of this country is unknown. Some more recent writers suppose that this people gave its name to Scandia, or Scandinavia.
