, otherwise the land of Babylon, also called the land of Nimrod (Micah 5:6), after the name of the founder of the kingdom of Babylon, and the land of the Chaldeans (Jer. 24:5; 25:12; Ezek. 12:13), after the ruling tribe of the Chaldeans there, was located in the fertile plain of Shinar, which was the cradle of human societies (Gen. 11:1, 2), in the basin of the rivers Tigris and Euphrates, 15 miles from Baghdad, 40 from the Persian Gulf, and 130 from Jerusalem.
