Bag; Purse

(Mark 6:8)—a container for money, food, or other valuables. Travelers could carry provisions in a bag, while a belt or girdle sometimes served as a purse with a hollow or folded compartment. When Jesus sent the Twelve without bread, bag, or money in their belts, he trained them to depend upon God’s provision and the hospitality offered to the gospel (Mark 6:7-10). The instruction belongs to that mission and is not a condemnation of every practical provision for later travel.
