Haran (Harran)

—(1) (Gen. 11:31–32; 2 Kings 19:12; Isa. 37:12; Ezek. 27:23; Acts 7:2–4) an ancient city of Upper Mesopotamia. Terah died there; Abraham departed from it for Canaan; and Laban, Rebekah’s brother, lived in the region (Gen. 27:43). Ezekiel names Haran among Tyre’s trading partners, and Assyria later subdued it. The site is securely associated with modern Harran in southeastern Turkey, near the Balikh River. (2) (1 Chron. 2:46) a son of Caleb by Ephah.
