Salome

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

—the name of two women: (1) (Mark 15:40–41) wife of Zebedee and mother of James the Elder and John the Evangelist. She followed the Lord Jesus from Galilee and, like others, at first misunderstood the nature of His kingdom (Matt. 20:21). She was present at His Crucifixion and burial and was among the myrrh-bearing women who came early to anoint His body. Some considered her a sister of the Virgin Mary; the Church commemorates her with the Myrrh-bearing Women. (2) The daughter of Herodias (Matt. 14:6; Mark 6:22), whose name is supplied by Josephus rather than the Gospels. The source condemns her part in Herod’s beheading of Saint John the Baptist and records a later tradition about her death.
