(Gen. 2:12) — in the opinion of the Jews, a pearl or some other precious stone, such as carbuncle, crystal, and the like. In eastern India there is a kind of fragrant resin bearing the same name, and for this reason many think that this aromatic substance is what is meant in the passage cited; others suppose that the word signifies pearls, of the kind now found in the Persian Gulf. According to the Septuagint’s translation, bdellium is the same as anthrax, otherwise carbuncle, or crystal, so called for its resemblance to ice.
