Gihon, otherwise Geon

(stormy, rushing) (Gen. 2:13) — the second river of Paradise, flowing out of Eden and watering the land of Cush. It is supposed that this is the present-day river Araxes, which flows into the Caspian Sea. Gihon means “stormy,” and the Araxes is just such a river even now. Others think that this is the present-day river Oxus, still called by the Arabs Gihon to this day. Still others wish to see here the Upper Nile, the Indus, or the Ganges, or the eastern channel of the river Shatt al-Arab, and so on. But no definite explanation of the course of this river exists.
