(John 1:28) — a locality beyond the Jordan, where a crossing of the river was located, which explains the name of the place (house of the crossing). In this locality, on the far side of the Jordan, John the Baptist preached and baptized; here too, it is supposed, the Israelites crossed the Jordan under the leadership of Joshua. It lay at a distance of 30 English miles northeast of Jerusalem, and it was probably here that the city of Beth-barah, mentioned in the Book of Judges (7:24), was located.
