(Gen. 28:12)—in Jacob’s dream at Bethel, a stairway or ramp set upon the earth reached to heaven, and angels of God were ascending and descending upon it while the LORD stood above or beside him. The vision assures Jacob of God’s presence, providence, covenant promise, and protection. Christian interpretation sees its fullest realization in Christ, the true meeting of heaven and earth, especially in Jesus’ allusion to angels ascending and descending upon the Son of Man (John 1:51).
