Beth-zur

(house of the rock) (Josh. 15:58) — a city of the tribe of Judah, with dependent villages. Rehoboam rebuilt and fortified this city (2 Chron. 11:5–7). The name of this city is mentioned also after the captivity (Neh. 3:16), and often in the apocryphal books, as well as in Josephus. Eusebius thinks it was located 20 miles from Jerusalem, in the direction of Hebron. By ancient tradition, the baptism of the nobleman of the Ethiopian queen Candace by the apostle Philip took place in this very locality, in which even to the present day a spring and the settlement Bethsur have been preserved (Acts 8:26–39).
