Candace

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Acts 8:27) - the general title of Ethiopian queens, just as Pharaoh was a title of Egyptian kings and Caesar of Roman emperors. The Ethiopia in this passage was generally understood as Meroë, or Upper Egypt. Since Candace was a title, the absence of precise evidence makes it difficult to identify which queen Acts means. See Philip the Apostle.
