Canaanite Woman (Syrophoenician Woman)
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Matt. 15:22; Mark 7:26)—a Gentile woman from the region of Tyre and Sidon. Matthew calls her a Canaanite, while Mark calls her a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth. She appealed to Jesus for her tormented daughter; Christ praised her great faith and healed the child. The two descriptions reflect overlapping biblical and regional designations, not a contradiction.
