The Church is catholic—that is, universal—because she is not confined to one place, age, or people but gathers the faithful of every land, time, and nation. In Christ there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian nor Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all (Col. 3:11). The source therefore applies to the universal Church Christ’s promises that the gates of Hades will not overcome her and that He will remain with her to the end of the age. It cites the 1848 Encyclical of the Eastern Patriarchs for the Orthodox teaching that the Holy Spirit preserves the catholic Church from error in the faith.
