Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(2 Sam. 8:18; 15:18; 20:7; 1 Kings 1:38, 44)—royal guards and retainers regularly named with the Pelethites under David and Solomon. They protected the king and carried out special commands. Their name may reflect an association with Crete or the southern coastal peoples, but the source’s direct equation with Cretans and Philistines remains uncertain.
