Hadadezer Adraazar

(help of Hadad) (2 Sam. 8:3; 10:16), so named, probably, after the Syrian deity Hadad, king of Zobah, a contemporary of King David, one of the richest kings of Zobah, or Soba. David waged several wars with him, in one of which he took captive 20,000 footmen and 700 horsemen, besides a great number of war chariots. On another occasion, when Hadadezer made an alliance with a neighboring king, David again defeated him and took 22,000 men captive. Among the spoils of war were golden shields and a great quantity of silver and bronze.
Some years later, Hadadezer and three other Syrian kings made an alliance to help the Ammonites against David; but the entire Syrian army was defeated by the Israelites under the command of Joab, on the east bank of the Jordan. In this battle between 40,000 and 50,000 of the enemy were slain, and after this they became tributary to David (1 Chron. 19).
