Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(2 Tim. 4:10) — a mountainous region on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea; formerly it formed part of the Roman province of Illyricum, bordering on Macedonia and Upper Moesia, and separated from Liburnia. In the Middle Ages Dalmatia belonged to the Venetian Republic, but by the Treaty of Campo Formio, in 1798, it passed to Austria, to which it still belongs today. In this region the Gospel was preached by St. Titus the Apostle, disciple and companion of St. Paul the Apostle. Its chief cities in ancient times were: Salona, near modern Split, and Epidaurus, now Ragusa Vecchia, and Lissus.
