Delos Myndus

(1 Macc. 15:23) — the smallest of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea, according to mythology considered the birthplace of Apollo and his sister Artemis, or Diana. There once existed here the oracle of Delos, considered the most trustworthy. On this island, according to Josephus, lived a considerable number of Jews, and its trade was so developed that on some days as many as a thousand slaves were sold in the markets of Delos (Josephus, Antiquities, 14, p. 668). At present Delos is almost uninhabited, on account of its unhealthy climate.
