Gortyna
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(1 Macc. 15:23) — a very large and ancient city on the island of Crete, mentioned in 1 Maccabees on the occasion of the renewal by the Jews of their alliance with the Romans under the high priest and leader Simon. Gortyna lay midway between the eastern and western extremities of the island and was not far from the locality of Fair Havens, so that St. Paul the Apostle, on his way to Rome, could have preached the Gospel at Gortyna.
